SACRAMENTO – Senator Tom Berryhill, R-Twain Harte, on Tuesday asked Senate and Assembly colleagues from both parties to support a common sense measure to ensure undocumented perpetrators of the most heinous crimes are deported.
The constitutional amendment would require a higher level of cooperation between the California Department of Justice and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the purposes of identifying and deporting undocumented violent felons upon the completion of their prison sentence.
The bill would remove incentives for such individuals to return to California after deportation by blocking aid from various state-funded assistance programs and revoking driving privileges. Any person convicted of a violent felony would be guilty of a deportable offense upon their return to California.
“Some of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle have publicly expressed their support for the deportation of undocumented violent felons,” Berryhill said. “I invite colleagues from both chambers and both parties to coauthor this measure with me.”
